SCXL Event Coverage
coverage by Joe Alvarez
South California Xball League
The first event of the, Southern California Xball League, SCXL held at SC Village
on Feb. 4th was a total success. Teams from all across Southern California came out to play this new and exciting 3-man Xball tournament.
DV8 takes first
Every team rostered 6 and 12 players and all of them were very enthusiastic to compete. Though few teams signed up for this new format, all of the players came away really excited looking forward to the next event. This was the first time that any of them got a taste of Xball and were really happy to have had a taste of it.
Most of the teams brought along a coach to help on their sidelines, some even brought an entire pit crew to help the team get ready in between points. Aaron Karsh ran an excellent event. From my stand point, there were no problems all day long. Matches started around 9 am and lasted all day.
Splat Kids takes second
Several matches were very close including one of the final prelim matches. Splat Kids came back from a 4-1 deficit to beat out DV8. The game was filled with close points and game breaking moves. Teams adapted well to the new format. The 3 man Xball format made for quick points, eliminating the need for a lot of paint. Teams played the event with as little as six cases helping keep costs down to a minimum, especially those teams that brought larger rosters.
Strange Kids takes third
After the preliminary round robin, DV8 went into the semi-final round with the first seed followed by Splat Kids, Strange Kidz, and Protégé. The semis finished with Splat Kids beating out Strange Kidz to move onto the finals against DV8. This game was filled with excitement. DV8 and Splat Kids Fans lined the sidelines for the match up to determine the 1st and 2nd place finishers. Each team had learned how to adapt to the Xball format very quickly. The final game went back and forth, but at 4-3 DV8 pulled out the victory hanging the final flag to win the match 5-3.
The League’s main sponsor, PAINTBALL ACE www.paintballace.com, contributed all the prizes for the event. The next event hopes to be even bigger and better. Look for it to come in early April. For more information you can check out their website at www.socalxballleague.8k.com.
Protege takes a fourth place finish
Though few teams were in attendance, SCXL Promoter had this to say, “I think the event went awesome. After the event all the buzz was "we should have played" or "we have to play the next one for sure." I think the next one is going to be a lot bigger with more teams. We are going to rework the entry fee to try and attract more teams. I’m really looking forward to the next event as are the teams in the region.”
